Diamond Push Up

The diamond push up is a bodyweight pressing exercise performed with the hands placed close together in a diamond shape beneath the chest, shifting emphasis to the triceps and inner chest. It suits intermediate to advanced lifters looking to increase tricep strength and add variety to their pressing work.

How to do the Diamond Push Up

  1. Place your hands on the floor directly under your chest with thumbs and index fingers touching to form a diamond shape.
  2. Extend your legs behind you into a plank position with your body forming a straight line from head to heels.
  3. Lower your chest toward your hands by bending your elbows, keeping them close to your sides.
  4. Descend until your chest nearly touches your hands or you reach a comfortable depth.
  5. Press through your palms to extend your elbows and return to the starting position.

Form tips

  • Keep your elbows tucked at roughly 45 degrees to your torso rather than flaring them out wide to protect your shoulders and maximize tricep engagement.
  • Maintain a rigid plank position by bracing your core and squeezing your glutes throughout the movement to prevent your hips from sagging.
  • Position the diamond directly under your chest or slightly lower rather than too high near your neck to maintain proper pressing mechanics.

Common mistakes

  • Flaring the elbows out wide reduces tricep activation and places excessive stress on the shoulder joints.
  • Allowing the hips to sag or pike upward breaks the plank position and reduces core engagement while compromising pressing efficiency.
  • Placing the hands too far forward or too high shifts the angle awkwardly and can cause wrist or shoulder discomfort.

Sets and reps

For strength, perform 3 to 5 sets of 4 to 8 reps with added resistance or tempo variations; for hypertrophy, perform 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 15 reps.

Frequently asked questions

Are diamond push ups better than regular push ups for triceps?
Diamond push ups place significantly greater emphasis on the triceps due to the narrow hand position and reduced chest involvement. They are more effective for targeting tricep development compared to standard push ups.
Why do my wrists hurt during diamond push ups?
Wrist discomfort typically occurs from excessive extension at the wrist joint or improper hand placement. Try angling your fingers slightly outward, using push up handles, or performing the exercise on your fists to reduce wrist strain.
Can I do diamond push ups every day?
Daily diamond push ups are possible if you manage volume and intensity appropriately, but your triceps and chest need adequate recovery to grow stronger. Most lifters benefit from performing them 2 to 4 times per week with at least one rest day between sessions.
