Leg Press Calf Raise (Machine)

The leg press calf raise is a calf isolation exercise performed on the leg press machine by pushing through the balls of your feet to extend the ankles. It suits lifters who want to build calf size and strength with heavy loads in a stable, supported position.

How to do the Leg Press Calf Raise (Machine)

  1. Sit in the leg press machine and place the balls of your feet on the bottom edge of the platform with your heels hanging off.
  2. Press the platform away until your legs are fully extended and disengage the safety locks.
  3. Lower your heels by allowing your ankles to flex, bringing the platform toward you until you feel a full stretch in your calves.
  4. Push through the balls of your feet to extend your ankles and raise your heels as high as possible, contracting your calves at the top.
  5. Control the descent back to the stretched position and repeat for the desired number of reps.

Form tips

  • Keep your legs fully extended throughout the movement to isolate the calves and prevent the quads from taking over.
  • Push through the big toe and second toe rather than the outside of the foot to maintain proper ankle alignment.
  • Pause briefly at the top of each rep with full ankle extension to maximize calf contraction.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the knees during the movement: this shifts tension away from the calves and turns the exercise into a partial leg press.
  • Using partial range of motion: limiting the stretch at the bottom or not fully extending at the top reduces muscle activation and growth stimulus.
  • Bouncing out of the bottom position: this relies on momentum rather than muscle contraction and increases injury risk to the Achilles tendon.

Sets and reps

For hypertrophy, perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps with moderate to heavy weight, while strength work typically uses 4 to 5 sets of 6 to 10 reps with heavier loads.

Frequently asked questions

Should my toes point straight or angled during leg press calf raises?
Toes pointing straight ahead targets the overall calf musculature most effectively for most lifters. You can experiment with slight toe angles to emphasize different portions of the calves, but straight is the standard starting position.
How does leg press calf raise compare to standing calf raise?
The leg press calf raise allows you to load the calves more heavily due to the stable, supported position and horizontal angle of resistance. Standing calf raises involve more stabilization and a vertical load path, which some lifters find more functional but harder to overload.
How far should I lower my heels on leg press calf raises?
Lower your heels until you feel a strong stretch in your calves, typically when your ankles are fully flexed and heels drop below the level of your toes. Avoid forcing excessive range of motion that causes discomfort in the Achilles tendon.
