Lunge (Smith Machine)

The Smith machine lunge is a lower body exercise that uses a fixed barbell path to perform lunges with added stability and load. It suits lifters who want to isolate the quadriceps and hamstrings while minimizing balance demands.

How to do the Lunge (Smith Machine)

  1. Set the Smith machine bar at upper back height and position it across your upper traps and shoulders.
  2. Unrack the bar and step one foot forward into a split stance, keeping your torso upright.
  3. Lower your body by bending both knees until your rear knee approaches the floor and your front thigh is roughly parallel to the ground.
  4. Press through your front foot to drive back up to the starting position.
  5. Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other side.

Form tips

  • Keep your front knee tracking in line with your toes rather than caving inward to maintain proper alignment.
  • Position your front foot far enough forward so your knee stays behind your toes at the bottom of the movement.
  • Maintain an upright torso throughout the movement by engaging your core and avoiding excessive forward lean.

Common mistakes

  • Taking too short a stride causes the front knee to travel excessively over the toes, increasing knee stress.
  • Allowing the front knee to collapse inward reduces stability and places unwanted stress on the knee joint.
  • Leaning the torso too far forward shifts emphasis away from the legs and can strain the lower back.

Sets and reps

For strength, perform 3 to 4 sets of 6 to 8 reps per leg with heavier load; for hypertrophy, use 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps per leg with moderate weight.

Frequently asked questions

Should I do Smith machine lunges with my front foot or rear foot under the bar?
Position yourself so the bar stays over your center of mass, which typically means your rear foot stays closer to directly under the bar. This allows you to maintain balance as you step the front foot forward into the lunge.
How far forward should I step for Smith machine lunges?
Step far enough forward so that at the bottom position your front shin is vertical or slightly angled back, with your knee behind your toes. This distance varies by height and limb length but typically ranges from 2 to 3 feet.
Can I do walking lunges in a Smith machine?
The Smith machine is not suitable for walking lunges because the fixed vertical bar path prevents forward movement. Use stationary lunges in the Smith machine or perform walking lunges with dumbbells or a free barbell instead.
