Calf Raise

The calf raise is a bodyweight exercise that strengthens the calves by lifting your heels off the ground to rise onto the balls of your feet. It suits anyone looking to build lower leg strength and size, from beginners to advanced lifters.

How to do the Calf Raise

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart on flat ground or with the balls of your feet on the edge of a step, heels hanging off.
  2. Keep your legs straight with a slight bend in your knees and engage your core for balance.
  3. Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible, contracting your calves at the top.
  4. Pause briefly at the peak of the movement.
  5. Lower your heels back down in a controlled manner until they are below the level of the step or return to the starting position on flat ground.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form tips

  • Drive through the big toe and second toe rather than the outside of your foot to keep proper alignment and maximize calf engagement.
  • Control the descent for at least two seconds to increase time under tension and prevent bouncing out of the bottom position.
  • Keep your ankles, knees, and hips stacked vertically throughout the movement to avoid shifting your weight forward or backward.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the knees excessively during the lift shifts tension away from the calves and reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • Rushing through the repetitions with momentum instead of controlled movement decreases muscle activation and increases injury risk.
  • Not achieving full range of motion by failing to rise high enough or lower deep enough limits muscle development and strength gains.

Sets and reps

For strength, perform 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps with a controlled tempo, and for hypertrophy, aim for 3 to 5 sets of 12 to 20 reps with minimal rest between sets.

Frequently asked questions

Should I do calf raises on a step or flat ground?
Using a step allows for a greater range of motion by letting your heels drop below the level of your toes, which increases the stretch on the calves. Flat ground is effective for beginners or when a step is unavailable, though the range of motion will be more limited.
How do I make bodyweight calf raises harder?
Perform the exercise on one leg at a time to double the load on each calf, or slow down the tempo to increase time under tension. You can also add a longer pause at the top and bottom of each repetition to increase difficulty.
Why do I feel calf raises more in my feet than my calves?
This usually indicates that you are not rising high enough onto the balls of your feet or that your foot stabilizers are fatiguing before your calves. Focus on achieving maximum height at the top of each rep and ensure you are pressing through the correct part of your foot.
