Crossover Triceps Extension (Cable)

The crossover triceps extension is a cable exercise where you stand between two high pulleys, grab the opposite handles so the cables cross in front of your body, and extend your arms downward to full lockout. It suits lifters who want constant tension on the triceps throughout the range of motion and prefer bilateral cable work over single-arm or free-weight variations.

How to do the Crossover Triceps Extension (Cable)

  1. Set both cable pulleys to the highest position and attach single-grip handles to each side.
  2. Stand centered between the cables, reach up to grab the left handle with your right hand and the right handle with your left hand so the cables cross in front of your chest.
  3. Step forward slightly to create tension, position your feet shoulder-width apart, and lean forward at the hips with a neutral spine.
  4. Begin with your hands near your chest and elbows bent, then extend both arms downward and outward until your elbows reach full lockout.
  5. Pause briefly at full extension, then control the weight as you return to the starting position with your hands near your chest.

Form tips

  • Keep your elbows in a fixed position throughout the movement rather than letting them drift forward or backward as you extend.
  • Maintain a slight forward lean from the hips to align your body with the angle of resistance and keep tension on the triceps.
  • Focus on squeezing the triceps hard at full lockout rather than rushing through the bottom portion of the rep.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the elbows flare out to the sides reduces triceps engagement and shifts tension to the shoulders.
  • Using momentum by rocking the torso back and forth turns the movement into a pressing motion rather than an isolation exercise.
  • Stopping short of full elbow extension leaves the triceps partially contracted and reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Sets and reps

For hypertrophy, perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps with moderate weight and controlled tempo, while strength-focused training typically uses 3 to 5 sets of 6 to 8 reps with heavier resistance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between crossover triceps extension and regular cable triceps pushdown?
The crossover version uses cables that cross in front of your body and requires you to stand between two pulleys, which creates a different resistance angle and requires more core stability. The regular pushdown uses a single cable directly in front of you with a bar or rope attachment, allowing for heavier loads and simpler setup.
Should my arms go straight down or outward during crossover triceps extension?
Your arms should extend downward and slightly outward following the natural path created by the crossed cables. The exact angle depends on your setup, but the key is maintaining fixed elbow position while extending fully along the line of resistance.
How far forward should I lean during crossover triceps extension?
Lean forward from the hips approximately 15 to 30 degrees, enough to align your torso with the angle of the cables and maintain tension throughout the movement. Leaning too far turns it into a pressing motion, while standing too upright reduces triceps engagement at the bottom of the rep.
