Single Leg Press (Machine)

The single leg press is a unilateral leg exercise performed on a leg press machine, targeting the quadriceps and hamstrings one leg at a time. It suits lifters looking to correct strength imbalances, improve single-leg stability, or add training variety to their leg workouts.

How to do the Single Leg Press (Machine)

  1. Sit in the leg press machine and place one foot in the center of the platform at roughly shoulder width, keeping your other foot flat on the floor or resting on the machine frame.
  2. Release the safety handles and lower the platform in a controlled manner until your knee reaches approximately 90 degrees or your hip flexion allows without your lower back rounding.
  3. Press through your entire foot to extend your leg, driving the platform away until your knee is just short of full lockout.
  4. Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other side.

Form tips

  • Keep your lower back pressed firmly against the seat throughout the movement to prevent it from rounding at the bottom of the rep.
  • Drive through your entire foot rather than just your toes to maintain balance and maximize quadriceps and hamstring engagement.
  • Control the descent and avoid bouncing at the bottom to maintain tension on the working leg and reduce injury risk.

Common mistakes

  • Allowing the knee to cave inward during the press reduces stability and places excessive stress on the knee joint.
  • Locking out the knee completely at the top transfers tension away from the muscles and onto the joint structures.
  • Using too much weight forces compensations like lifting the hips off the seat, which compromises spinal position and reduces training effectiveness.

Sets and reps

For strength, perform 3 to 4 sets of 5 to 8 reps per leg with heavier loads, while hypertrophy work typically uses 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps per leg with moderate weight.

Frequently asked questions

Should I train my weaker leg first or second?
Train your weaker leg first while you are freshest to ensure it receives maximum effort and attention. This approach helps prevent the stronger leg from setting a standard the weaker leg cannot match when fatigued.
Where should I place my foot on the platform?
Place your foot in the center of the platform to balance the load across quadriceps and hamstrings. Adjusting foot placement higher emphasizes hamstrings and glutes, while lower placement increases quadriceps involvement.
How do I know if the weight difference between legs is too large?
A strength difference of more than 10 to 15 percent between legs typically warrants focused attention through unilateral training. Use the single leg press to match the weaker leg's reps and weight before progressing the stronger side.
