Svend Press (Plate)

The Svend Press is a chest exercise performed by squeezing two weight plates together and pressing them away from the body at chest height. It suits lifters looking to build inner chest activation and improve mind-muscle connection through constant tension.

How to do the Svend Press (Plate)

  1. Stand upright and hold two weight plates together between your palms at chest level with arms bent and elbows out to the sides.
  2. Squeeze the plates firmly together throughout the entire movement to maintain tension.
  3. Press the plates straight forward until your arms are fully extended in front of your chest.
  4. Pause briefly at full extension while maintaining the squeeze.
  5. Slowly return the plates back to the starting position at your chest, keeping constant pressure between the plates.

Form tips

  • Focus on squeezing the plates together as hard as possible throughout the entire range of motion to maximize chest engagement.
  • Keep your shoulders down and back rather than allowing them to round forward as you press.
  • Press in a perfectly horizontal plane at chest height rather than angling upward or downward.

Common mistakes

  • Relaxing the squeeze between plates during the movement: this eliminates the constant tension that makes the exercise effective.
  • Pressing upward or downward instead of straight forward: this shifts emphasis away from the chest and reduces exercise effectiveness.
  • Using momentum or jerking the weight: this reduces time under tension and diminishes the mind-muscle connection benefit.

Sets and reps

For hypertrophy, perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 20 reps with lighter plates, focusing on the squeeze and contraction; strength work is not typically the goal for this exercise due to its constant-tension nature.

Frequently asked questions

What weight plates should I use for the Svend Press?
Start with two 5-pound or 10-pound plates and focus on the squeezing motion rather than heavy weight. Most lifters find that 10 to 25 pounds per plate provides sufficient resistance for effective chest activation.
Does the Svend Press work the inner chest?
The Svend Press creates strong adduction and squeezing at the midline, which emphasizes the sternal fibers of the pectoralis major. While you cannot isolate the inner chest completely, this exercise provides a unique stimulus for that region through the squeezing component.
Can I do the Svend Press with dumbbells instead of plates?
Plates are preferred because their flat surfaces allow for proper squeezing and hand positioning throughout the movement. Dumbbells do not provide the same squeezing mechanics and would fundamentally change the exercise.
