Leg Curl (Machine)

The leg curl is a machine-based isolation exercise that targets the hamstrings by curling the weight pad towards your glutes while lying face down. It suits lifters of all levels looking to build hamstring strength and size with a controlled, stable movement pattern.

How to do the Leg Curl (Machine)

  1. Lie face down on the leg curl machine and position the pad just above your heels on your lower calves.
  2. Align your knees with the machine's pivot point and grip the handles for stability.
  3. Curl the weight by bending your knees and bringing the pad towards your glutes in a smooth arc.
  4. Squeeze your hamstrings briefly at the top of the movement.
  5. Lower the weight under control back to the starting position without letting the plates touch between reps.

Form tips

  • Keep your hips pressed firmly into the bench throughout the movement to prevent lower back involvement.
  • Point your toes straight or slightly inward to maximize hamstring engagement rather than letting your feet flare out.
  • Control the eccentric portion by taking two to three seconds to lower the weight rather than dropping it quickly.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting your hips off the pad during the curl reduces hamstring tension and can strain the lower back.
  • Using momentum to swing the weight up prevents consistent tension on the hamstrings and increases injury risk.
  • Allowing the weight stack to crash down between reps eliminates time under tension and reduces muscle stimulus.

Sets and reps

For hypertrophy, perform 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 15 reps with moderate weight and controlled tempo; for strength, use 3 to 5 sets of 5 to 8 reps with heavier loads.

Frequently asked questions

Should my knees be on or off the bench during leg curls?
Your knees should hang just off the edge of the bench, aligned with the machine's pivot point. This positioning allows full range of motion and proper joint mechanics throughout the curl.
How do I prevent cramping in my hamstrings during leg curls?
Reduce the weight and focus on controlled reps rather than forcing maximum contraction at the top. Ensure you are adequately hydrated and consider warming up with lighter sets before working at higher intensities.
What is the difference between lying and seated leg curls?
Lying leg curls keep your hips extended, which places the hamstrings in a lengthened position and emphasizes the lower portion of the muscle. Seated leg curls flex the hips, which pre-stretches the hamstrings and may allow for greater peak contraction.
